The centre’s researchers also initiate promising projects themselves. The technologies developed through these projects may be offered to companies or transferred to other research centres or commercial businesses.
A scrapie genotyping test was developed in our laboratories and is now offered to Canadian producers who wish to know their livestock’s genetic resistance or sensitivity. Over 2500 animals have been tested to date and, thanks to samples received, TransBIOTech has been able to build an impressive DNA bank for producers. This test permitted a genetic study of Quebec livestock in collaboration with the Centre d'expertise ovine du Québec (CEPOQ), in which 800 rams were tested. The genome tools used to develop this test are investments that will help develop other animal and human health tests.
The centre’s researchers have been working for years to develop a biotechnology tool to identify microorganisms in wastewater; the technology developed uses photonics and will allow for the creation of a biosensor in collaboration with the National Optics Institute (NOI).
In the coming years, the centre’s scientific team will be focusing its energy on genomics, proteomics and immunology projects in order to develop useful tools for companies.
