A genotyping test for scrapie was developed by TransBIOTech and is offered to Canadian producers who wish to know their animals’ resistance or genetic sensitivity. Over 2500 animals have been tested to date and, thanks to the samples received, TransBIOTech has built an impressive DNA bank for producers.
For information on the test, call

To enter the National Survey of Scrapie Genetics in Canadian Purebred Sheep, please use the following form (revised in july 2006). Now, unregistered offspring of to registered parents of the same breed is also accepted in the survey.
- New genotyping sample submission form
For genotyping of unregistered animals (1, 2 or 3 codons), please use the following form. The protocol for blood collection is also available.
- Genotyping form TBT
BLOOD SAMPLE COLLECTION PROTOCOL FOR GENE TYPING
- Cross-contamination and identification errors must be avoided at all costs. The needle must be changed after each animal and tubes must be clearly labeled. Please use the purchase order provided by TransBIOTech, (see PDF document, at bottom of page), sign it and return it to us with your samples.
- Call your veterinarian for blood collection in 7 ml vacutainer tubes (purple cap) containing EDTA. DO NOT USE HEPARINE TUBES.
- Place tubes on ice while in the pen, then in the refrigerator (4°C) until the carrier arrives to transport them. The tubes must never be frozen or kept at room temperature because the DNA will quickly degrade.
- Ask your veterinarian for a styrofoam box and keep your samples cool with an ice pack, not ice, while transporting. Clearly mark the address of your farm and that of TransBIOTech [201, rte Mgr-Bourget Lévis (Québec) G6V 9V6] on the box, in addition to filling out the bill of lading.
- When you or your veterinarian have your samples in hand, call Diane Cantin during office hours at (418) 833-8876 (ext. 3120) or fax her the duly-completed purchase order and the number of the bill of lading at (418) 833-8867 to monitor shipping progress.
- We will fax or email your results (producer) and the original document will be sent by regular mail.
Promotion for unregistered animals : During the National Survey Program, analyse 1 codon for 25 $ and 2 or 3 codons for 35 $. |
